my favourite childhood books

childhood books | marlee and you

I'm sure we can all think back to the days of being a child and the favourite books we used to read over and over again before bed - or at least I can! I wasn't much of an avid reader growing up, but there was one children's book series that I absolutely adored! They were the Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Parks.

I own around ten books from the series and I have a couple practically memorized, I've read them that many times! Each book starts off with the same line and continues on in Junie B.'s perspective using rather poor English and featuring numerous profound thoughts that every kindergartener has. This character had such a wild imagination and crazy ideas.

Thinking back on home videos and how I know I acted as a child, there's most definitely a corelation between me and the character of Junie B.

For some people, their favourite childhood books could be by Dr. Seuss or Robert Munsch. For me, mine were written from a 5-year-old's fascinating point of view!

What was your favourite book or series from growing up?

world cup fever + nail art

world cup | marlee and you
[source]
I can't pinpoint when exactly it began, but my family has become incredibly caught up in the World Cup craze over the past decade or so. Canada doesn't ever qualify or take part in the World Cup, so naturally the majority of Canadians choose to root for wherever their heritage comes from, and for my family, our heritage originates in Germany. Thankfully Germany has a great soccer team that's worth watching! Over the years I've picked out my favourite players on the team, and love seeing them pop up again during the next major tournament.

My family buys shirts and flags and Germany swag to wear to the German-Canadian Club where we watch the games live! It's a fascinating cultural experience!

I can never pass up a nail art opportunity, so I always dress up my nails to show some extra World Cup spirit! It's especially great for when I'm at work and in uniform (I can't exactly wear a Germany jersey there).

With this post, I really just wanted to start up a soccer conversation! Are you getting into the World Cup hype?

Which team are you rooting for this time around?

hair renewal products

Before the big chop, my hair was quite long and also slightly damaged, so I was always trying out
new products to keep my locks looking healthy. I've had all sorts of hair issues from frizz, split ends, dryness... everything!

Here are six different products that were each great for different hair issues I've had. I've tried quite the array of brands whose products varied in price ranging from $4-12.

1. Moroccan Argan Creme "sheer hydration leave-in mist"
The word mist was misleading, the product sprays out in a cream and shouldn't be sprayed directly onto hair. I spray the argan creme into my hands, rub them together, the evenly rub it through my styled hair to smooth flyaways and prevent dry and staticy hair!

2. Pantene Pro-V Overnight Miracle "repair serum"
This product is great to restore life to your hair (especially if you use a lot of heat) in between washes. You simply apply 1-2 pumps into your hair before bed, and you'll be looking silky smooth the next morning! I recommend only applying this to the ends of your hair where the majority of damage is.

3. Infusium 23 "repair and renew leave-in treatment"
This is my all-time favourite leave-in conditioner! You can spray it onto wet or dry hair to prevent further damage while healing existing issues. It's so lightweight and smells great!

4. Tresemme Split Remedy "split end sealing serum"
This treatment is perfect to apply to freshly washed, damp hair. I add it to the ends of my hair to create shine and repair split ends, which otherwise look very dull.

5. Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition "detangling nourigh + repair leave-in"
I love this product in the summer when I'm going to the beach or swimming in the pool all day! It smells amazing and is the perfect product to detangle and smooth your messy, frizzy, post-swim locks!

6. John Frieda Brilliant Brunette "shine shock leave-on perfecting glosser"
This product can either be used on soaking wet hair so seal split ends, or to finished off a styled look and add a glossy finish with no flyaways. I've been using this one for years and love how it can be used in different ways!

I wouldn't be able to choose a favourite product among these because they're all pretty great and used for different reasons. I obviously don't use all of these products every time I wash or style my hair. I typically just pick and choose which I use depending on the weather, the heat tools I'm using, and the overall texture of my hair that day. Now that it's summer, I'll definitely continue to use all of these to keep my hair looking healthy after swimming for hours on end!

Do you have a go-to hair renewal product?

2014 wedding fashion trends

It's the most wonderful time of the year - wedding season! Over the years I have collected stacks of wedding magazines and it's always so amusing to see how wedding fashions change! I've pulled together a few of my favourite 2014 wedding fashion trends to share, all gathered from the wedding-planning inspiration hub that is Pinterest.

First off, the ever-so-popular mint green colour scheme. The trending colours of choice for bridesmaids have evolved into light and airy shades such as mint green, soft pink, baby blue or pastel yellow. The light shades give a subtle and dainty vibe to a wedding party which everyone seems to be loving these days!

Alongside the soft-coloured bridesmaids are the groomsmen who are also brightening things up with light grey suits becoming more popular - especially for spring and summer weddings!

Wedding style goes all out glam with the return of wedding gown sleeves! Since the royal wedding and Kate Middleton's gorgeous dress, classy sleeves of lace instantly became the must-have gown feature! Many people are turning to this more retro and glamorous look for their big day, and I absolutely love it!

Lastly, I chose a more non-traditional trend - the coloured wedding gown! Recently seen on actress Kaley Cuoco on her big day, this trend steers away from the classic all-while gown. I've seen other gowns that are off white, faded gold or even red. Similar to this idea is having coloured crinoline underneath an all white dress!

To finish off, I thought I'd share with you my go-to wedding inspiration site that isn't Pinterest and not everyone has heard of: Wedding Gawker! There are thousands of real weddings to be found and inspired by on this site - take a look!

Do you know someone getting married this wedding season?

first impression: body shop's hand and nail cream

hand cream | marlee and youSince starting my summer job at a pool store, my hands have been a major issue. I handle many boxes and chemicals and wash my hands countless times throughout a shift at work. A week ago, one of my fellow employees introduced me to The Body Shop's Almond Hand & Nail Cream and I loved it so much, I simply had to purchase it for myself!

I've been using this cream periodically throughout the day to keep moisture locked into my hands and to prevent them from drying up and cracking. The cream itself isn't too thick - I'd describe it as being thin and light. It has a subtle scent that smells like summer!

I've only been using this cream for a couple days, but I'm totally impressed by how it has repaired my dry and cracked skin! I haven't needed to apply cuticle cream or oil like I used to and there's no sticky feeling after the lotion is rubbed in. The moisturizing properties work almost instantly! With this product, a little goes a long way, so this 100ml tube should last me quite a while.

I definitely recommend this cream to anyone who works with their hands or has dry and sensitive skin! Like all Body Shop products, this cream was made using fair trade ingredients and has not been tested on animals. If you're interested in trying it out, you can check out the Body Shop website here!
